Brown spots may appear on our skin as we age. Also known as solar lentigines or liver spots, these areas of excess pigment in the skin are always an unwelcome discovery. Commonly, they are found on the face, chest, arms, shoulders, backs of the hands, upper back, and tops of the feet.
What Causes Brown Spots?
Though brown spots are also called age spots, they don’t come about as a direct result of the aging process. Instead, sunlight is the main cause of these pigmentation irregularities.
The reason why brown spots most commonly appear on the face, chest, arms, shoulders, and the other aforementioned regions is because these regions experience a great deal of direct exposure to sunlight.
The sun’s ultraviolet light is constantly affecting our epidermal skin tissues, causing them to create more melanin pigment in the form of melanocytes. Melanocytes are pigment cells in the skin tissues. As more pigment appears, the color of the skin gets darker. This helps to protect the deep skin layers against ultraviolet light.
Unfortunately, after too much exposure to ultraviolet light, the epidermal skin tissues sometimes create accumulations of excessive melanin. This is how liver spots are formed.
Brown spots also form on the skin due to overuse of tanning beds and tanning lamps.
