As we get older, we start noticing the formation of lines, wrinkles, and folds in our skin. These range from shallow crow’s feet that appear near the corners of the eyes all the way to deep nasolabial folds that stretch from the sides of the nose to the sides of the mouth. How do we get these wrinkles?
What Causes Wrinkles?
Wrinkles and fine lines are caused by a number of factors, depending on the type of wrinkle involved. Shallow lines and wrinkles, such as those found near the eyes and on the forehead, are caused by repeated facial muscle movements.
As we go about our day-to-day lives, we frequently form the same facial expressions and perform the same facial movements. Our muscles must constantly contract in the same positions. This overuse of the muscles makes it more and more difficult for them to relax after contracting. The result of this is the creation of dynamic wrinkles, which eventually set into static wrinkles.
Moderate and deeper wrinkles and folds, such as those found near the mouth and nose, often form as a result of an age-related loss of collagen and elastin in the skin tissues. These proteins help to keep the skin tight and firm. Environmental factors also contribute to the creation of these aging signs.
Wrinkles and fine lines can be resolved in a number of ways. Wrinkle-reducing cosmeceutical products can be used to ease away fine lines. These include creams that contain amino peptides, which help to stimulate the creation of new collagen and elastin.
Chemical peels are treatments that use chemical exfoliation to peel away the upper layers of damaged skin cells. This reduces sun damage in the tissues and encourages growth of fresh, wrinkle-free skin cells.
IPL treatment uses pulses of light to cause the treated cells to create new collagen and elastin. This treatment also causes remodeling of existing collagen.
Many patients come in for Sublative® rejuvenation, a method of wrinkle removal that involves bipolar radio frequency energy. By using this treatment on key regions of the skin, the body’s healing response is triggered, causing new skin cells to form in the place of sun-damaged cells.
BOTOX® is a way to relax contracted muscles in order to help smooth out the overlying skin. This injectable treatment is often ideal for forehead and eye region lines like crow’s feet, vertical lines between the brows, and horizontal forehead lines.
Juvederm® and Belotero ® are injectable dermal fillers that treat moderate and deep lines by supplementing the tissues with hyaluronic acid. This adds volume to ease away those unwanted wrinkles.
