Sun Damage

The popularity of tanning is undeniable. Each summer, thousands flock to the beach to give their skin a beautiful new glow. However, this short-term improvement can have harsh long-term health risks. Exposure to the sun is the primary source of age spots and wrinkles, especially on the face, giving skin a weathered, uneven, damaged look.

A bronze complexion may look fashionable, but sun exposure accelerates the skin’s aging and increases your chances of malignant skin cancer.

How Does the Sun Damage Skin?

Sunlight carries ultraviolet rays that penetrate the skin and cause damage. UV rays are strong enough that clouds and fog only partially block their beams. When ultraviolet light enters the skin, your body produces melanin, a dark pigment that’s responsible for tanning as well as skin discoloration. The light also damages the skin’s elastin protein, which is partially responsible for skin firmness and toning. As the fibers erode, the skin starts to stretch and sag, losing its natural elasticity.

Sun exposure also dries out oil in the skin, causing rough, damage-prone skin that appears aged. Cumulative sun exposure is a known factor in developing different types of skin cancer, and severe sunburns increase the risk of developing melanoma.

Treatments

To provide a gentle and safe treatment for sun damage, we have a variety of excellent cosmetic products and treatments for Burnaby and Vancouver patients.

One option is our cosmeceutical products, which function as both beauty enhancers and healing treatments. These are typically topical creams and lotions that contain various medications to promote skin health.

Microdermabrasion and chemical peels can remove the weathered outer layer of skin and reveal the healthy new skin cells beneath.

We also offer IPL photofacials using intense pulsed light to penetrate the skin, targeting the sun-damaged regions with light energy. The light heats and then causes minor damage to pigmented areas and visible blood vessels, triggering the body’s natural healing response.

Sublative® rejuvenation uses bipolar radio frequency energy to encourage a healing reaction in the deeper skin tissues. More collagen is produced, resolving skin problems in treated areas.

Additionally, dermal injectables such as Botox® and Juvederm® can be used to smooth away lines and wrinkles.

If you’re interested in treating sun damage, contact our office in the Burnaby and Vancouver area and arrange a consultation with Dr. Perhez Jaffer at (604) 298-4481.
