The first place where we experience visible signs of aging is our skin. As time passes, the skin begins to look older and more worn down, the result of various physiological changes.
The skin is composed of several layers. The outer layer is known as the epidermis. Below this, there is the dermis, followed by the subcutaneous layer.
The layers of the skin contain hair follicles, blood vessels, nerves, oil glands, fat, sweat glands, pigment cells, proteins, and skin cells. These experience many changes as we grow older, resulting in the appearance of numerous signs of aging.
Signs of Aging
The skin begins to sag over time, and wrinkles and folds start to form. This is due to a decline in the production of collagen and elastin protein, two key proteins for skin tissue health. With less collagen and elastin, the skin loses strength and support, becoming looser and less elastic.
Skin also becomes thinner. It develops hollow, gaunt areas, a result of less support from the subcutaneous fat layer. As we age, fatty tissue is gradually lost from this underlying layer. This makes the skin less padded and more susceptible to trauma.
The skin develops a general dryness, and this coupled with the thinness of aging skin, makes it more likely to experience trauma. The dryness is a result many factors, including the skin’s sebaceous glands producing less oil over time and the tissues producing less collagen and elastin.
Loss of color is another common issue. The skin becomes pale and translucent; this occurs because of a decline in pigment-containing cells, also called melanocytes.
Brown spots and other types of pigmented lesions are more likely to form on aging skin, along with warts, skin tags, and rough patches.
Aging skin also has more fragile blood vessels, making it more likely that cherry angiomas will form. This also causes an increase in likelihood of bruising and bleeding under the skin.
We feature a wide variety of treatments to heal and revitalize aging skin.
Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products that also offer healing benefits, including moisturizing rough, dry skin to restore texture and skin tone.
Chemical peels are treatments that exfoliate layers of dead and damaged skin to reveal fresh, new, healthy skin cells that are free from blemishes.
IPL treatment is a non-invasive light-based method of erasing skin blemishes, clearing up fine lines, age spots, and other pigmentation issues.
Sublative® rejuvenation treatment is a way to encourage growth of collagen and elastin protein in the skin tissues through application of bipolar radio frequency energy.
BOTOX® is an injectable that eases away fine lines and wrinkles that form over time. This restores smooth, youthful-looking skin. We also offer injections of cosmetic fillers such as Juvederm in order to fill those moderate and deep wrinkles.
